What to do when you lose a tooth?

A dental implant will look and feel like your natural teeth, whether you are replacing  just one tooth, a few or all your teeth, dental implants will restore your smile, improve your confidence and ultimately function like natural teeth improving your overall quality of life.

The effect of a missing tooth

A patient with missing teeth (or just one tooth) will often suffer from a lack confidence, shying away from photographs and avoid smiling. The patient is initially concerned about the gap in their mouth but over a period of time their jaw bone will shrink back and can make the patient look older than they actually are. Eating  is also a huge obstacle, many patients will avoid eating out as they are embarrassed about their bridge or denture and eating certain foods is impossible. Our expert implant and cosmetic dentist recently restored a patient’s smile by securing their denture using dental implants, afterwards they said, “I wish I had done it 30 years ago, my life is completely different.”

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is an artificial root that is gently placed into the jaw to act as an anchor to support a crown or a denture. The result is a tooth that looks and feels like your own.

What are the benefits of a dental implant?
· A permanent simple solution · Looks and works just like your natural teeth
· Eat anything you choose
· No need to modify/reshape healthy teeth
· No more denture adhesives · Increased confidence and an improved quality of life

Can it replace a full denture?

Implants can also be used as anchors to improve the stability and retention of loose dentures. Patients find great improvements during speech and eating, increased comfort and renewed confidence.

Is a dental implant the right solution for you?

FILLING THE VOID WITH A SMILE TRANSFORMATION!

Our cosmetic dentist’s main area of interest is smile design and cosmetic restorative dentistry.  His passion is creating beautiful smiles and talks about changing peoples smiles with the placement of dental implants and smile tranformations   at our state of the art clinic in Athlone, Ireland.  Here is what he has to say…

Commonly I find it is the appearance of the space that bothers patients the most especially when it is at the front of the mouth. Leaving the space can be a reasonable solution especially when the space is at the back of the mouth but if that is not an option there are a number of ways in which a lost tooth may be replaced….

A dental plate

I personally detest calling them ‘dentures’ as it conjures images of false teeth that stay in a glass beside the bed! Plates can be made from either a metal or plastic frame and can replace one or more teeth. They don’t have to be n
oticeable either; you would be surprised to know who is actually wearing them! A modern version uses a lovely light and flexible plastic base that is unobtrusive in the mouth and matches the colour of the teeth and gums perfectly; they can even incorporate tooth or gum coloured clasps for maximum fixation. Unfortunately they must be left out at night to let the gums ‘breathe’ but not in a glass on your bedside table!

Bridging the gap

A small false tooth may be held in place in the space by attachment to a crown or metal wing on one or more anchor teeth. The type used depends on the position and quality of the anchor tooth or teeth. A bridge is fixed in place ‘permanen
tly’ and it’s lifespan is dependent on that of the tooth or teeth to which it is fixed. This sounds very complicated however they are commonly used; most dentists will have model versions to show you what a bridge looks like. It is also possible to have a personalised wax model made to see what the bridge will look like before committing to it.

They do need looked after and diligent cleaning in and around the bridge unit and the supporting anchor teeth is very important.

Implants

Basically this involves the insertion of a metal screw into the jaw bone. The screw integrates with the surrounding bone and provides a foundation on which a single tooth, a bridge or a denture may be attached. The number of Dental implants required depends on the size of space to be filled. The insertion can be carried out in a dental surgery under sterile conditions and while you are awake! Dental Implants require very detailed planning and many factors are to be considered including your medical history.  All of these options are dependent on whether your particular case is suitable and require careful thought and planning. We  can advise you and suggest which choice would be best.

It is important to have the confidence to smile and if it means exploring a few options to restore a space that is bothering you it will be well worth it. Look into filling that void! Smile Makeovers at Dental Excellence Ireland

Our smile is one of our greatest attributes.  Our smile can covey confidence, warmth and happiness.  Consistently the “number one” attribute that people notice when meeting for the first time is your smile.   I have been asked a lot lately about the cosmetic options for dark stained teeth. Do not fret, here at Dental Excellence Ireland we always have an option! If you are unhappy with the colour of your teeth then bleaching is a viable option to consider. However this may not be the best option for you.

Some patients that come to me for cosmetic smile makeovers have staining within their teeth  and they have found that no matter how much bleaching they have done there is no improvement. This type of staining is known as ‘intrinsic staining’ and it is not removed by bleaching.
An option for these type of teeth is porcelain veneers. If your teeth are too sensitive to hot and cold then bleaching may not be for you but veneers could be.

It is important to be careful when it comes to bleaching as there are many products on the market supplied by non-dentally qualifed companies. An inferior product may either be too weak and not make any difference to the colour of your teeth and be a waste of your money OR be too strong and burn your gums. Be careful as you only get one set of teeth for your adult life.

Another complaint that patients have is that they have been bleaching their teeth and the old veneers or crowns are still dark. This is because only natural tooth can be bleached. Some Patients have chipped or uneven teeth and would like another option other than bleaching.

Dental Veneers

A veneer is a  layer of porcelain overlying the existing tooth. At Dental Excellence Athlone I carry out a detailed smile design analysis of the patient’s smile including tooth dimensions, shades and surrounding gum and lip shape. These are very important factors as if not considered can result in ill- fitting, too thick or wrongly coloured veneers.

Having veneers placed involves removal of only a small amount of tooth, the veneer is then made from porcelain and bonded onto the tooth using a high strength bonding system. For a natural look a high quality dental laboratory must also be used, tiny characteristics such as different shades and textures may be added to make the veneer  to look like a perfect yet natural tooth. We can even change the shape of the teeth to make them shorter or longer, square or rounded. I personally only use one of the top laboratories in the country, the results make it worth it!

Irish Dentistry Awards

We are so proud and honoured to be finalists in the prestigious Irish Dentistry Awards for Best New Practice and Most Attractive practice.   This is a first for Dental practices in Athlone and the Midlands.

Our Journey so far….

The aim of our new practice was to introduce something innovative and positive to the region and we felt that Dental Excellence in Athlone Ireland has accomplished exactly that and much more.

In Athlone we were aware that there was a lack of certain dental facilities, with patients travelling long distances for specific treatments.

It took a lot of hard work, sleepless nights and  investment to renovate two dilapidated shopping units in the heart of the town. The end result has surpassed our expectations, with the creation of a stunning glass-fronted, minimalistic practice which feels more like a luxury spa than a dental practice.

Patients are welcomed in a light and airy reception area, complete with ceramic flooring, plasma screens, contemporary furnishings and most importantly a friendly smile!

The fifteen months spent planning the project, employing consultants (who had previously worked on spa hotels) and finding an appropriate site, were stressful times.

We were aware that patients and members of the dental community would need to travel to the practice, so a central location was paramount. We are opposite the largest shopping centre in Athlone where ample car parking facilities are available

We always put the patient experience first.

We have created an inspirational practice which is architecturally planned to perfection in its layout for the patient now.

The ability to use it for educational meetings, private waiting areas, multiple treatment rooms and a lecture space which flow naturally into each-other and yet provide a sense of calmness.

Through this facility we are able to serve the community in a positive
and professional manner. Our FREE CONSULTATION services for cosmetic dentistry have been introduced to enable patients to come and visit for a no obligation appointment. With this in mind we are hoping to encourage dental phobics, nervous patients and non-attenders to take ownership of their dental health and maybe create the smile that they always dreamed off and never thought possible.

With the investment of a  CBCT scanner  (3D SCANNER) we have eliminated the necessity for patients to travel outside the area for advanced dental treatment.

We always go the extra mile for our patients and every need is uniquely catered for.

For example we have created a treatment pathway for anxious patients which allows them to visit and chat with a member of our team regarding their worries. This all occurs in a non clinical environment – we believe understanding their concerns is 90% of the treatment completed!

We are delighted with the impact we have made in the area since opening  and with the wonderful welcome and appreciation we have received from local people and businesses has been overwhelming.
We are often asked how we have managed to achieve so much so quickly. In summary we feel we offer a unique addition to the local area – our look, our approach, our patient experience; along with a motivated, well trained team to be able to go beyond the regular duty of care sets us apart.
